Geologic Assessment of the Maritimes Basin in Nova Scotia, PEI, and New Brunswick
Overview
This overview study completed in 2003 offers an overview of the Paleozoic Maritimes Basin, which covers an area of over 215,000 square kilometers (Fig E1). Only 365 petroleum exploration wells have been drilled in the onshore portion of the area with a further 9 drilled in the shallows offshore.
At least 10 separate sub-basins (Fig E2) can be recognized. This report characterizes the stratigraphy, sedimentology, and exploration prospectivity of each of these sub-basins. Each sub-basin is rated in terms of play type and exploration potential.
The Maritimes Basin has had a long and sporadic exploration history and is receiving new attention with discoveries at McCully Field (Moncton-Sackville sub-basin), and activity at Stoney Creek Field and on PEI.
