GEOLOGIC
STUDY OF THE DEVONIAN
SLAVE
POINT FORMATION
PEACE RIVER ARCH
AREA – NORTH WEST ALBERTA
Overview
The
Slave Point play in north western Alberta is stratigraphically subtle and
exploration success demands a sound understanding of its depositional architecture
and stratigraphic evolution. Wireline log interpretation alone is
insufficient to accomplish this goal. The present study documents
Slave Point geologic evolution and relates this to its exploration potential
by incorporating detailed core descriptions from 549 cored wells (more
than 8,000 metres of core). Reservoir quality porosity is directly
tied to specific depositional facies and the study includes a series of
facies distribution maps that mirror porosity trends.
This
study is a compilation of 4 linked study sub-areas with stratigraphic picks
and depositional facies correlatable between each of the areas. Areas
1-3 are in the eastern part of the study area located from Township 80
to 95, between Ranges 10W5 and 23W5. Area 4 is in the western part
of the study area located from Township 88 to 91, between Ranges 21W5 and
12W6. At the time of the study all available well control penetrating
the Slave Point Formation (or equivalent) were used, resulting in a 1,494
well database.
