SWAN HILLS FORMATION CAROLINE FIELD – SOUTH WEST ALBERTA This study provides a geologic assessment of the sedimentologic, diagenetic and structural evolution of the Caroline Field. In particular the study focuses on the development of a model of dolomitization to explain reservoir development in the field area. The Caroline Field produces from the updip stratigraphic closure of dolomitized platform margin carbonates of the Devonian Swan Hills Formation. It is one of a number of producing fields from along this platform system that includes Rosevear, Brown Creek, and Hanlan fields. Within the Caroline Field area 7 major depositional cycles have been identified through detailed facies correlation. These cycles are made up of a predictable array of depositional facies which have varying reservoir characteristics. Individual cycles average a maximum of 15 to 20 metres in thickness. The cycles are separated by apparent deepening events which are indicated by the superimposing of deeper water facies over shallower water sequences. The study area is located in south western Alberta and covers Townships 32 to 36 between Ranges 4W5 and 6W5. To fully understand the Swan Hills platform at Caroline all available Swan Hills Formation or deeper penetrations were included to form a 44 well database. Core intervals from 26 wells (1,260 metres) were examined and described in order to develop a depositional facies model. In addition 39 petrographic thin sections were taken to determine the diagenetic sequence of events affecting the Caroline Field, in particular, dolomitization and the relative importance of porosity types and cements.
